Columbia University's Summer Research Program was founded in 1990 by Dr. Samuel C. Silverstein, Professor of Physiology in the College of Physicians & Surgeons. The Program is administered on a daily basis by Jay Dubner, Program Coordinator. The primary aim of the Program is to provide New York metropolitan area middle and high school science teachers with sustained hands-on experience in scientific research so they can better understand the practice of science, and better transmit to their students and fellow teachers a feeling for its practice. Each teacher spends two consecutive summers working as a laboratory research assistant under the supervision of a Columbia faculty mentor. Opportunities are available in astronomy, biological sciences, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering, environmental sciences, genetics, material science and engineering, medicine, microbiology, nanotechnology, physics, physiology, toxicology, and other specialties.

July 2008: The Program's 19th summer has begun with 26 New York area participants, 2 science teachers from Singapore, Alex Romero and Rachel Lytle visiting Singapore schools, and Leslie Glinoga and Jeana Marinelli working in Australian research labs.received the Siemens Science Teacher Initiative Award. May 2008: Nancy Lee and Michelle Seeley (both Class of 2006) received the Siemens Science Teacher Initiative Award. March 2008: Leslie Glinoga and Rachel Lytle (both Class of 2007) presented their research projects at the RET Poster Session of the 2008 NSTA National Conference. March 2008: Thomas Cork (Class of 2008) received the Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award for New Teachers at the 2008 National NSTA Conference. January 2008: 30 current and former program participants attended the Partners in Science National Conference. November 2007: Rob Rouse (Class of 2008) ran in the NYC Marathon on November 4th. Here he is at the 17 mile point. August 2007: 24 lesson plans developed by 2007 program participants are now part of the lesson plan repository. The repository contains more than 300 standards-based lesson plans. August 2007: Summer Research Program in the news. August edition of InVivo. August 2007: Margie Savitzky and Michelle Seeley (Class of 2006) worked for five weeks in Marine Studies laboratories at James Cook University (Townsville, Australia) as part of the Summer Research Program's International Research Program. Coral Reef Studies Press Release July 2007: Three Singapore science teachers and two Summer Research Program teachers (Kate Callaghan and Nancy Lee) participated in the program's 4th Singapore Science Teacher Exchange. March 27, 2007: Columbia University & the Summer Research Program hosted the New York State Science & Engineering Fair (NYSSEF). February 2007: Congratulations to Tom Byrne (Class of 2003) and his Science Olympiad students at New Rochelle H.S. They are the 2007 Lower Hudson Valley Regional champion. January 2007: 15 participants and 9 alumni attended the 2007 Partners in Science National Conference.
